I've been thinking about this the past few days and have decided that while it does indeed sound very good, I simply cannot agree with this assessment.
While I would agree that Jesus was/is indeed selfless, we must recognized that that is not why He came. As John tells us, "For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved." The world Gospel, after all, means "Good News" and that is the heart of it.
When you shift focus from the Good News of salvation to the selflessness of Jesus, you shift from the eternal to the temporal; selfish temptation will not exist in Eternity. Should we strive for the character of Jesus? Absolutely! Will it save us? Absolutely not! The heart of the Gospel is God's work of salvation through His Son, not the characteristics of His Son while He was on earth.
