Prius to Matrix

So, I'm thinking that we might leave our Prius in CA, since it has those fancy carpool stickers and all. I'm thinking that we'll sell it here and buy a Matrix (or Vibe?) in Portland...perhaps even one with all-wheel-drive.

Any thoughts on this?

We looked at the Matrix and the Vibe and finally settled on the Saturn VUE. They were (at the time) all in the same price range and each, with manual transmission, got great gas mileage. The advantage to the VUE was size. Traveling with guitars, instruments and kids necessitated the size so it was a no-brainer.

Also, we rolled our first VUE on a trip back from Colorado with an 11-week old baby in it... and all four people in the car walked away.

After that, we got another VUE.

Stop kidding yourself with the pseudo-hip facade and buy the damn minivan. Light blue, wood on the sides, 18 cup-holders.

you know me, and you know that wendy and i drove our matrix exclusively for 3 years. What you may not know is that I once fit my 88 key rhodes piano, with amp, and full drum set in the car all at the same time, with the front passenger seat still available. The fact that you can also just lower one of the back seats at a time, means you can easily fit man, woman, child, and guitars into this awesome mobile.

Plus, you have a great life on Neo jokes for the future. For example, if you ever have car trouble, you can say to a friend "I should have taken the blue pill". Hilarity ensues

Well, there's such a thing as just too small but no such thing as just too large, so caveat emptor... but I have rented a Chevy HHR on business several times and walked away impressed with the overall efficiency and livability of the design. Got 30 mpg+ in highway driving, consistently. One of the more "worldly" American cars out there, if that makes any sense, insofar as customers from other parts of the world to whom efficiency is just as important as space would like this car.

I second the vote for a subie. I have loved mine. Even my 6 cylinder can get 27 mpg+ if driven conservatively. The company is well run and about as green as a car manufacturer can get. You can get the new models in PZEV models, but a used one would do just fine too. Great for safe driving, dogs and kiddos.

I'm enjoying this conversation, as we consider getting something new as our Camry continues its slow slide towards heap-dom.

And how exciting that we now have another good reason to visit the Northwest. Congrats!

Hey Guys!
Just checking in to see what you are up to!! So great seeing you while we were down in Cali! :) Just had to tell you we bought a vibe and absolutely love it! It takes us everywhere with really great mileage! We take our 100 pound dog, hiking/climbing gear and it still has room for a car seat!! Anyways, sending big hugs your way!! :) ~Heidi
